How to Hunt Glitches Like a Pro: Find Game-Breaking Bugs Before the Internet Does

Somewhere out there right now, a game shipped last Tuesday is sitting on thousands of hard drives with an undetected sequence break hiding inside it. A wall that can be clipped through. A dialogue trigger that skips half a dungeon. An item duplication exploit that nobody's written about yet.

The person who finds it first gets to feel like an absolute genius.

That person could be you.

Glitch hunting has a reputation as something reserved for obsessive speedrunners who've played the same game 3,000 times. And sure, those people find a lot of bugs. But the methodology they use isn't magic — it's a set of repeatable habits and mental frameworks that any player can learn. This guide breaks it down.

Start With the Right Mindset

Before you touch a single input, you need to rewire how you think about games.

Most players treat game worlds as finished, intentional spaces. The floor is a floor. The wall is a wall. The invisible barrier at the edge of the map is just... the edge of the map.

Glitch hunters treat game worlds as code rendered into physics, and code has edges. Every surface has collision data. Every animation has a start frame and an end frame. Every trigger zone has boundaries. The question isn't whether those boundaries have gaps — it's where the gaps are.

Adopt what speedrunners sometimes call the "assume nothing" approach. Every rule the game seems to enforce is worth testing, at least once.

Understand What Causes Glitches

Glitches aren't random. They fall into predictable categories, and knowing those categories tells you where to look.

Collision failures happen where geometry gets complex — corners, doorframes, sloped surfaces meeting flat ones, anywhere two distinct collision meshes intersect. If you can get your character model partially into a surface, sometimes the engine resolves the overlap by pushing you through it instead of back out.

State conflicts occur when two game systems try to control the same thing simultaneously. Think of a cutscene triggering while you're in the middle of an attack animation. The game doesn't always know which state to prioritize, and the result can be wild — weapons that stay active during cinematics, movement inputs that carry over into locked sequences, or character positions that get "saved" incorrectly.

Out-of-bounds exploits usually rely on finding geometry that wasn't designed to have player collision — the underside of a level, areas behind loading triggers, spaces the developers never expected anyone to reach. Once you're out, the engine sometimes lets you walk through normally solid objects because collision is only calculated for the "player-accessible" version of the world.

Menu and inventory glitches are underrated by beginners. Pausing at precise moments, equipping and unequipping items mid-animation, or opening menus during transitions can freeze variables the game expects to be changing. Item duplication glitches almost always live here.

The Systematic Method

Random button-mashing finds glitches occasionally. A systematic approach finds them reliably. Here's the framework:

1. Map the Edges

Identify every boundary in the area you're testing. Where does the player normally stop? Where do walls end? Where are the invisible barriers? Walk every inch of them. Push into corners. Jump along surfaces. You're looking for inconsistency — a spot where the collision behaves differently from what you'd expect.

2. Stress Test Transitions

Transitions are where glitches love to hide. Door loads, cutscene triggers, fast travel activations, save point interactions — any moment where the game is switching from one state to another is an opportunity. Try to interrupt these transitions. Activate them mid-jump. Activate them while taking damage. Activate them with a weapon ability mid-swing. The more you can stress the handoff between states, the more likely you are to catch something breaking.

3. Chain Inputs Faster Than the Game Expects

Many glitches exist because players can input commands faster than the game's logic can process them. Try rapid menu opens and closes. Queue actions before animations finish. Spam interact buttons while moving. Modern games are tested by QA teams, but QA teams are human and can't test every possible input combination. Speed and overlap are your friends.

4. Look for Physics Edge Cases

Slopes, moving platforms, physics objects, and water transitions are all gold mines. Try sliding off a slope and interacting with something simultaneously. Stand on a moving object while it clips into geometry. Use in-game throwable items to hit triggers from unexpected angles. Physics engines are complex and notoriously finicky — the more you layer interactions, the more likely something unexpected happens.

Tools That Actually Help

You don't need specialized software to hunt glitches on console, but a few habits make a big difference.

Record everything. Both PlayStation and Xbox have built-in clip capture. Set it to record the last few minutes constantly. You will find something weird, not know what caused it, and desperately wish you had footage. Get in the habit of saving clips aggressively.

Take notes. Keep a running log of locations, conditions, and what you tried. "Weird collision near the second merchant" is useless three days later. "Merchant near the waterfall — sliding into the left corner of the stall at full sprint causes a brief clip into the wall geometry" is actionable.

Watch existing speedruns for the game — not to copy them, but to understand the game's physics vocabulary. How does the engine handle momentum? What does the character do when it hits an angled surface? Understanding the baseline helps you recognize when something is behaving abnormally.

When You Find Something

First: reproduce it. A glitch you can only do once might be noise. A glitch you can do five times in a row is real. Figure out the exact conditions — character state, position, input timing — and document them precisely.

The Real Reward

Yeah, breaking a game wide open before anyone else documents it is a great feeling. But the deeper reward is what glitch hunting teaches you: that game worlds aren't monolithic, fixed realities. They're constructed systems, and constructed systems have seams.

Once you start seeing games that way, you can't unsee it. Every wall becomes a question. Every transition becomes a test. And every now and then, the game answers in a way nobody expected.

That's the whole game within the game — and it never really ends.
